What the neighbourhood is like
Stone streets, small squares and buildings two or three centuries old: almost everything in the Barri Vell is listed, and that shapes the kind of home you find. Expect high ceilings, vaults and beams, many flats restored in the last twenty years, and few lifts. Penthouses and flats with views of the Cathedral or the river are the most sought after.
The Mercadal, between the river and the Gran Via, is the practical centre: Plaça Independència, the Rambla, the market and the shops. Its buildings are newer than those of the Barri Vell, often early or mid-20th century, with spacious flats and many lifts.
Some streets have tourism and nightlife, especially in spring and summer. Before buying, visit the flat at different times of day and check whether the building has restrictions on use or renovation.

Services and transport
Everything on foot: shops, restaurants, culture, the Lleó market and the City Hall. The train and AVE high-speed station is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Rambla. Much of the area is pedestrianised; car access is restricted.
